New period drama The Lady’s Companion has been compared to Bridgerton by Netflix fans, following its premiere on the streamer last week

Netflix fans are devouring the “delightful” new period drama The Lady’s Companion, following its premiere on the streamer last week.

The eight-episode series centres on 19th-century chaperone Elena Bianda, who is tasked with securing husbands for three affluent sisters, only to find herself falling for one of the potential grooms.

As she grapples with her emotions, Elena is “drawn into a world of love, scandal and comic intrigue,” according to the official show description.

Set against the backdrop of 1880s Madrid, this Spanish-language romantic comedy stars Cable Girls actor Nadia de Santiago as the lead.

The ensemble cast also features Álvaro Mel, Isa Montalbán, Zoe Bonafonte and Iratxe Emparán, reports Surrey Live.

Since The Lady’s Companion debuted on the streamer last week, viewers have flocked to social media to heap praise on the show’s “delightfully juicy” storyline, drawing comparisons to Netflix hit Bridgerton.

One Reddit user enthused, “I loved it! And I can’t wait for season 2. It has Bridgerton vibes, but it doesn’t make you roll your eyes every five minutes. All the characters are so well-written. Finally, a female lead who doesn’t play too much into the ‘not like other girls’ trope.”

Another viewer recommended, “Honestly The Lady’s Companion is a good show to fill the Bridgerton void. So I recommend you get on it and watch it,” while a third confessed: “Just finished in one sitting. I need MORE!!! 5/5 for me.”

A fourth fan shared their enjoyment: “I binged half of the season last night and half this morning. It was truly a delightful watch from start to finish.”

Other enthusiasts are clamouring for more, with some fans pressing Netflix for a sequel after the season ended on a jaw-dropping cliffhanger.

“Just binged it today. Oh my god that cliffhanger, I need season 2!!!” exclaimed one viewer, while another fervently warned: “If this show doesn’t get a second season I will burn this entire world to the ground!!!!”

Critics are also on board, with Decider commenting: “The Lady’s Companion is a pleasant enough romantic period comedy with a colourful look and just enough modern touches to keep the episodes from being a slog of costume-drama cliches.”

Adding to the praise, The Review Geek noted: “The show is incredibly stylish, with bright pastel colours and a lot of witty dialogue to boot.”

The series boasts the directorial talent of Carlos Sedes and Claudia Pinto, with scripts penned by Gema R. Neira, María José Rustarazo, Salvador S. Serrano, Sara Alquezar and Ricardo Jornet.
